DEAR FRIENDS
We are slowing down a bit at St. Paul’s as we approach our summer schedule (see below), but there is one more big blow-out this Sunday, June 10, as we celebrate the ministry of Father Bob Griffith and his 15 years at St. Paul’s. I know that everyone will want to be in attendance to show our appreciation to him. Fr. Bob will be celebrating mass and preaching, and there will be special Coffee Hour in his honor with the presentation of gifts from the parish. Fr. Bob has chosen all his favorite hymns for this Sunday and requested that we use the St. Paul’s Service. So, warm up your voices! The St. Paul’s Service was commissioned from composer David Hurd in honor of the 150 anniversary of the founding of the parish and premiered in 2000. Dr. Hurd was Professor of Sacred Music and Director of Chapel Music at the General Theological Seminary in Chelsea for 28 years and is presently the Director of Music at The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Times Square. This setting was used more frequently in past years, and I’m glad that Fr. Bob has requested it for his last Sunday because it makes an excellent end to the program year.
This Sunday is also the last Sunday for our intrepid and dedicated choir, so please do take the opportunity to thank Alex Canovas, our Director of Music, Nathan Taylor, our organist, and all of the members of the choir for their hard work this year; in fact, they are putting in an extra rehearsal this week to prepare for the end of the year and Fr. Bob’s last Sunday. I requested a specific anthem for the day, and Alex and the choir were kind enough to indulge me. The anthem, by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy from his oratorio St. Paul, is a favorite of mine, but more importantly I wanted the text to honor Fr. Bob: “How lovely are the messengers that preach us the Gospel of peace. To all the nations is gone forth the sound of their words, throughout all the lands their glad tidings (Romans 10:15,18).
After this Sunday, we have one more Sunday, June 17, Father’ Day, with mass at 11:00, and then we go to our summer schedule with mass at 10:00 beginning on June 24.
See you at mass!
Fr. Wallace
CELEBRATION OF FR. BOB’S MINISTRY AT ST. PAUL’S
Sunday, June 10
By now everyone has received the letter from Fr. Bob announcing that he will be leaving St. Paul’s. We are planning a grand celebration of his 15-year ministry on Sunday, June 10, part of which is the presentation of a gift of appreciation. If you would like to contribute to Fr. Bob’s gift, in appreciation and thanks for his ministry, special envelopes will be available in the service bulletin through June 10. You may also mail your contribution to the church or pay through the website. Remember to provide your name and pledge number (if you have one). Please make checks payable to St. Paul’s Carroll Street.
SEARCH COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRS APPOINTED
The Wardens and Vestry of St. Paul’s are very excited to announce that Monika Torrey and Keith Edwards have accepted the invitation to serve as Co-Chairs of the Rector Search Committee. This is the next step in St. Paul’s period of transition.
MUSIC STAFF CONTINUING
The St. Paul’s community has been very happy with the work of Alex Canovas and Nathan Taylor since they started in their current positions in mid-January of this year, and we are happy to announce that both of them have accepted the invitation to continue through the 2018-2019 program year—Nathan as Organist and Alex as Director of Music. Please take the opportunity to thank them for their hard work this year and congratulate them on continuing with us through 2019.
